Footpaths

Did you know that Pewsey has 67 registered Public Rights of Way, stretching across over 36 kilometres of beautiful Wiltshire countryside? These paths, including footpaths, bridleways and byways, are part of a historic network that allows walkers, riders and cyclists to explore our parish and its surroundings on foot or horseback.

Public Rights of Way are legally protected paths that the public can use to cross private and public land. In Pewsey, while a few of these paths are owned and maintained by the Parish Council or Wiltshire Council, the majority cross land owned by private individuals or estates.

Maintenance of these paths is the responsibility of the landowner, which means gates, stiles, and surface upkeep often fall to the farmers, residents and institutions whose land the path traverses. The Parish Council plays a key role in helping to ensure these routes remain accessible and signposted, and works with volunteers and landowners to keep the network in good condition.

Whether you’re heading out for a morning walk, connecting to the Pewsey Vale circular routes, or linking to long-distance paths like the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath, these Rights of Way are part of what makes Pewsey such a special place to live and explore.

If you come across an issue—an overgrown path, broken stile or unclear signage—you can report it via the Wiltshire Council website or contact the Parish Council directly.

Let’s all do our bit to look after these routes so everyone can continue to enjoy the beauty and freedom of walking in Pewsey.
